The Turtle served as the example for all the submarines that exist today. The Turtle started with a man named David Bunshell. He was a genius inventor who had an idea for a boat which travelled under water. This boat would travel under water and would need to be stealthy and have enough firepower to destroy a boat traveling on the surface of the water. In college, Bunshell started to build land mines and torpedoes for the purpose that the Turtle would later accomplish. He had to design the submarine with the little technology which was available. Inventors today admire the Turtle, because of how it was made, what was it used for, and what happened after it was used. The Turtle was a very complex and unique submarine for its time. In 1776, it was first used as a submarine and was considered exceptional because of the way it was built. Bunshell wanted to develop a stealthy ship which was able to invade and destroy British Naval Ships. Bunshell built the Turtle as an 8-foot-long barrel with a lead bottom, so it would be able to operate under water. He then added wooden planks, leather straps, and metal bands to support the structure. The Turtle was designed to be …show more content…

For example, submarines could go on missions like the Turtle and hunt down surface ships in wartime. Submarines could travel underwater unseen and collect intelligence on the strength and movement of enemy ships. Even though the Turtle was not successful in destroying enemy ships, the design and principle of the usefulness of submarines like the Turtle changed naval warfare forever. Once the Turtle was invented and was operating in the water, surface ships would always wonder about enemy ships underneath the water hunting them, but remaining
