Colonial America’s democracy was a work in progress with democratic and undemocratic features. Colonial America had democratic features like citizen participation; where citizens were voting for leaders in the colony. An undemocratic features in Colonial America was slavery; because the colonists would be taking away someone else’s rights. Also work in processes such as religious freedoms were taking place.
Athens established what is generally considered the first democracy in the fifth century BC. It took over three hundred years for it to evolve from a monarchy. The Athenians were far ahead of other countries in their structure of government. The revisions of laws, representative justice, and citizen-based law making impacted Athens’ movement from a monarchy to a democracy, influencing the United States’ government today. The presidency of Andrew Jackson came to be known was the “Age of the Common Man” due to Jackson’s beliefs and policies. In the years prior to Jackson’s election, to be eligible to vote a person had to be: white, adult, male, and a property owner. When Jackson became president in 1828, he removed property ownership as a requirement for voting.
