When The Salem witch trials stated many people were accused of witchcraft and some of them have to go through a severe test.Elizabeth Proctor and John Proctor were two of the people that had to go through a severe test. Elizabeth was arrested because Abigail Williams accused her of witchcraft as a result she was put in jail. John Proctor her husband went to court to testify that she was innocent.
Elizabeth severe test begins when John decides to testify in court that he had an affair with Abigail. Elizabeth was called to court. When John Proctor and Judge Dep. Gov. Danforth were discussing about the affair. Parris brought her to the courtroom to testify about the affair between John and Abigail. Elizabeth denies the affair because she wants to save John’s reputation, so she lies about it. Since the affair she was so angry at him that she did not forgive him yet. Elizabeth still lies because she does not want John to be in trouble. She does not what Johnn to be punished for that. Although Elizabeth prefers to die instead that getting him in trouble. Even though she knows that the confession would save her life she did not said the true. Elizabeth did not know that John has confessed already. he got more in trouble. Danforth said to Elizabeth to look at him only. He starts to question her about why she dismissed Abigail as her servant. Elizabeth responded to him that she did it because she did not satisfy her and her husband. She also stated , “My husband -is a goodly man, sir.” (521). Danforth grunted to Elizabeth, “Look at me! To your own knowledge, has John Proctor ever committed the crime of lechery?,” (521). Elizabeth chooses to lie to save John’s reputation. She answer, “ No, sir.” (521). Finally he realized that everything is a lie from the girls, there is not witchcraft at Salem. Rev. Hale wants that the condemned people to confess to save their lives even if is a lie he wants them to confess. The court took Elizabeth out of jail to convince John to confess to save his live.
