His energetic interpretations of song and sexually provocative style of performance combined with a very potent mix of influences across color lines during a revolutionary era in race relations led him to great success but also a lot of controversy. Elvis and his family lived in a two room shotgun house that Elvis dad Vernon Presley built. They were poor but despite their hardships Elvis and his parents formed a close bond, he was especially close to his mother Gladys Presey. Vernon worked from odd job to odd job which caused an unstable economy for the family which resulted in the family often relied on help from friendly neighbors and government food assistance. IN 1938 Vernon was found guilty of altering a check, he was later jailed for 8 months Without their main provider Gladys and Elvis lost the house when Elvis was just two years old, the year 1938.The same house Vernon built with his own blood and tears. With no other options they moved in with relatives. The family was very religious and they attended an assembly of god church where young Elvis first found inspiration for his music. He was later encouraged to enter a singing concert after singing a rendition of old sheep during morning
