The Armada was known as an invincible fleet due to the formation that it would form. The formation consisted of a few ships becoming a distraction and the others would come from behind for a sneak attack, in a flanking maneuver. This “armada was an elite fleet sent out by King Philip II in 1588 to invade England.” (brittanica.com) His main goal for pursuing England wasn’t for land or money, but for revenge on England’s Queen. Queen Elizabeth of England had made Philip II her enemy in 1587 when she executed Queen Mary of Scotland since she was part of the Catholic Church. During this era, England saw many new reforms and changes to common everyday life. Also, the armada being propelled mostly on the religious doings of England, England had a different way of religion. England was no longer part of the Holy Catholic Doctrines, the monarch decided that they would branch out and become the Anglo church. England did this because King Henry VI wanted to marry another woman, but the church would not approve the divorce of him and his current wife. Therefore, Henry turned England into a protestant country. During the reign of Queen Elizabeth, English people started believing that family was a fundamental part of life, and the people had to oblige to a law that forces them to attend the protestant churches. King Philip II even sent a spy to England before sending out the Armada as to how much of England’s population was Catholic. The spy had come back and told him that the majority of those who are Catholic resided in two specific towns and two specific counties. This gave King Philip II hope that he would recruit the majority of England’s population and be able to have his revenge on Queen Elizabeth, but he was wrong. The citizen’s impression of Queen Elizabeth had terrorized them enough that they wouldn’t help someone of their own religion. He thought to himself that revenge was one of the many goals he had as to why he wanted to take down Queen Elizabeth, but he also wanted to “restore Roman Catholic faith,” (britannica.com) which the queen had taken away. He knew that the Queen’s army will be larger than his, but he relied on his formation to win the battle which led to his downfall since he had no backup
