In the Great Gatsby, there are several similarities between F. Scott Fitzgerald and the titular character, Jay Gatsby. These similarities include wanting success despite their poor upbringing, their tumultuous relationships, wild parties, and their shared whims; like alcoholism. From a young age, both Fitzgerald and Gatsby strived to be successful. Although Fitzgerald was unable to achieve this, he lived out his dream through Gatsby. F. Scott Fitzgerald was never quite as successful as he wanted to be.
Author of The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald, was born in St. Paul, Minnesota on September 24, 1896. He was an American writer of novels and short stories. He is known to be one of the greatest writers of the 1920s. He is also considered a member of the “Lost Generation”. Fitzgerald was born to an upper-middle-class family in 1896.
For multiple reasons The Great Gatsby impacted my life. With personal issues and a previous appreciation for the theatrical version of the story, I was able to connect with the novel on a much deeper level than most. Through Gatsby’s persistence and passion, I was taught how important it is to care enough and pursue everything, even your craziest dream. Also, Jay’s tragedy revealed to me when a person should realize that maybe it is better to draw a line and move on in life even if it hurts. Overall, I am very thankful for the opportunity to read the book and learn the lessons I did.
Throughout the novel The Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the audience is introduced to a wealthy young man by the name of Jay Gatsby who embodies many qualities. These distinct qualities are shown through multiple literary devices to form Gatsby’s character. Fitzgerald’s use of these devices such as diction, imagery, and symbolism emphasizes the importance of Gatsby’s character to help fully understand the novel and the message it brings to its readers. From a young age, Gatsby was a poor boy that persevered to acquire wealth and sophistication. Serving in the military, he met a captivating young woman named Daisy Buchanan whom he fell in love with, and since then has made it his personal mission to win her heart.
