Frederick Douglass He was born into slavery and worked on a slave farm in Maryland and in Baltimore when he was very young. Although Douglass got a bit more freedom than any other slave did down south. Slave were allowed or granted with nothing at all because they were slaves and people believe that they deserve nothing but to work more very little or not at all. During his free time Douglass his slave owner's wife had taught him how to read and write but her husband ended that quickly. Shortly after that he found ways to teach him. This is something that most of the slaves didn’t know how to do because they are forbidden to and were not granted this kind of kindness. With his wife being white and the president siding with him, I assume that those two factors did help . encourage others to side with him and help demolish slavery. They saw it as being ok because two people and one having enormous power agree they believe that it was for the better also. With the power of the president and creating the confederate states free that didn’t mean that they listened or followed. There were chaos and rebellions against the president. Many wanted to impeach him because they no longer stood by his side. Those went after blacks even more because they were giving some kind equality. Frederick Douglass “what to the slave is for the fourth of July?” he wrote and spoke to many people who listen to this speech. He explains that this day is about the freedom of this country and the independence that they have on this day and so forth on. Though this day is for the white and only they can truly rejoice because they are not and were not ever slaves. He thought of it as almost a joke because this day everyone is to celebrate even the blacks. But why would the African Americans celebrate the white man's freedom when they aren’t free. He found that embarrassing and mocking. It was like you’re rubbing it in their faces that they are not free people. He say’s “this fourth of July is yours not mine.” that there is nothing for him to help bring joy when there is no joy for him to spread because this doesn’t include him or his people it’s a one sided
