In Frederick Douglass’s essay “Learning to Read and Write” he explains many of the deterrents he faced as a slave, including the challenges of reading and writing in this era. Owners prohibited their slaves to have an education. Why would they not want their slaves to have an education? Being educated meant you had the power of knowledge. Slaves lacked the basic concept of understanding and power, therefore they couldn’t challenge the practice of slavery in a political manner.
In the article, “Learning to Read and Write” by Frederick Douglass, he achieved to learn how to read and write in the time of slavery in Maryland. At a young age he learned how to be literate. But then he was a slave that not only thought about being free but wanted to learn how to read and write. His mistress only helped him to learn the alphabet, but he was also accused of reading, so she never trusted him to be near a newspaper, book or anything that had to do with reading. Sometimes he would get sent to run errands and he tries to finish it fast so he can read a part in a book that he found or get some lessons.

Maneuvering through many obstacles, he managed to use his advantages to learn. He talks about his struggles and the hard ships he went through at a young age to lead him to where he is now. Frederick Douglass wrote about how he was born into slavery, this meaning he had no rights whatsoever as a human. He talks about how he learned to read even though it was forbidden for him to do so. Slave owners believed that educating the slaves were dangerous because they feared it would help them escape to freedom. Douglass was determined to get an education regardless of the fact that slaves being educated was considered to be culturally wrong.
Furthermore, Frederick Douglass mastered the skill of writing without detection from his masters. Many people write every day at school, work, or for fun. Meanwhile, Douglass hid his talent for the sake of keeping him alive. When Douglass worked in Durgin and Bailey’s shipyard, he watched ship carpenters mark the timber with letters. These ship carpenters would “write on the timber the name of that part of the ship for which it was intended” (Douglass 59).
In “The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass”, Douglass narrates in detail the oppressions he went through as a slave before winning his freedom. In the narrative, Douglass gives a picture about the humiliation, brutality, and pain that slaves go through. We can evidently see that Douglass does not want to describe only his life, but he uses his personal experiences and life story as a tool to rise against slavery. He uses his personal life story to argue against common myths that were used to justify the act of slavery. Douglass invalidated common justification for slavery like religion, economic argument and color with his life story through his experiences torture, separation, and illiteracy, and he urged for the end of slavery.
Having an education and being able to read and write caused the slaves to be “unmanageable”. Douglass went to Baltimore to live with Mr. and Mrs. Auld. Mrs. Auld began to teach him his A, B, C’s; that was until Mr. Auld told her she needed to stop or she was going to make him unmanageable and unfit to be a slave. Mr. Auld told Mrs. Auld “A nigger should know nothing but to obey his master- to do as he is told to do” (Douglass, “Narrative” 960). These slaves were kept from having an education, which would ruin their hopes of living once they had freedom.
In the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass An American Slave: written by himself, the author asserts that the way to enslave someone is to keep them from all learning. Douglass supports his claim by first stating that he was never allowed to know or ask questions about his birth date or family, and secondly showing that he was never allowed to learn how to read or even learn the alphabet. Douglass’s purpose in writing this is to bring attention to the evils and injustices of slavery to people who have the power to abolish slavery. Frederick Douglass in his narrative “Why I learned to Read and Write” demonstrates how he surpassed many obstacles along the way towards getting an education. These obstacles not only shaped Frederick’s outlook on life but also influenced him in his learning to read and write. Frederick’s main challenge was that of not being an owner of his person but rather a slave and a property to someone else. Frederick Douglass lived in the time when slavery was still taking place and slaveholders viewed slavery and education as incompatible. The slave system didn’t allow mental or physical freedom for slaves; slaveholders were to keep the apt appearance and slaves were to remain ignorant.
In the 1800s, for a slave to know how to read and write was not only unheard of, but illegal. Frederick Douglass was born a slave in rural Talbot County, Maryland. For about seven years, he received reading lessons from his mistress Hugh, but that all changed as soon as she commenced her duties as a slaveholder. The once kind hearted woman was changed into a woman to be feared. She stopped teaching Douglass how to read and would monitor his whereabouts in her home to ensure that he was not reading anything.
African-American slaves were forbidden to obtain the knowledge of being able to read or write, stemming from the fear of white masters that educated slaves will overpower them. Douglass managed to learn to read by bribing poor and hungry white boys into teaching him in exchange for bits of bread. Douglass illustrates his thirst for literacy through “[The] bread [he] used to bestow upon the hungry little urchins, who, in return, would give [him] that more valuable bread of knowledge” (pg 23). “Learning to Read and Write” by Frederick Douglass is a personal narrative which describes a specific time in his childhood when he was learning to read and write. Born as a slave in the pre-Civil War south, Douglass was not expected to be literate. However, through strong ambition, Douglass overcame restrictions and stereotypes placed on slaves and taught himself to read and write. Later in his life, Frederick Douglass wrote down this story in his book Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass in 1845. Today, students and adults can enjoy this narrative on how he overcame the struggles of learning how to read and write.
The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass is Frederick Douglass’s autobiography in which Douglass goes into detail about growing up as a slave and then escaping for a better life. During the early-to-mid 1800s, the period that this book was written, African-American slaves were no more than workers for their masters. Frederick Douglass recounts not only his personal life experiences but also the experiences of his fellow slaves during the period. This book was aimed at abolitionists, so he makes a point to portray the slaves as actual living people, not the inhuman beings that they are treated as.
