Mahatma Gandhi Manav Patel Mahatma Karamchand Gandhi was a humanitarian who used peaceful topics to fight for the freedom of India. He walked 250 miles from his Ashram to Dandi, a coast off of Eastern India. He then proceeded to pick up a lump of salt, thereby defying British Law. This story leads us to ask the question, why did Gandhi’s nonviolent movement work? Basically, he could convince the people to join him instead of killing off nonbelievers.
In the excerpt title “On Civil Disobedience” by Mohandas K. Gandhi describe injustice and a way to encounter it as well as his experience. Gandhi begins by explaining two types of injustice, people can encounter (taking the damage and violence). The author continues to provide his opinion about injustice. He describes satyagraha (Sanskrit), nonviolent resistance method, and how it works. Moreover, the author describe his belief (satyagraha) and how country or nation is controlled indirectly by the people.
When India was in depression, the British East India company heavily taxed salt. Many civilians were not able to afford a necessity in cooking. In order to stand up for these monopolies, Mohandas Gandhi started the salt march. According to “Gandhi and the Salt March”, “Gandhi began a march from his communal village in western India to the coast to gather salt for free.” This explains how Gandhi stood up against the monopolies with his followers by walking through these marshes and boiling the water gained in order to produce salt which was illegal at the time.
When the British began taxing salt and not allowing Indians to manufacture and collect their own salt, Gandhi stepped in and wrote a letter to the British governor of India. He was determined to show the British what wrongs they have done to India and to convert them through nonviolence (Doc 1.) Even when Gandhi was in jail, he inspired his followers to march without the use violence. None of his followers fought back even when they were beaten (Doc 4.) Being in jail for a total of 2,338 days, he “never felt the slightest hesitation in entering the prisoner’s box.”
Throughout history disobedience has led to great progress and prosperity. Disobedience has led to some of history's greatest social movements. Throughout history, many people have risen and rebelled to create great social progress. I honestly think that disobedience is man's original virtue. Disobedience has brought about change and revolution and can be brought up by anyone, regardless of color and gender.
Civil Disobedience Compare and Contrast Henry Thoreau and Martin Luther King both wrote persuasive discussions that oppose many ideals and make a justification of their cause, being both central to their argument. While the similarity is obvious, the two essays, Civil Disobedience by Thoreau and Letter from a Birmingham Jail by Martin Luther King Jr. do have some similarities. King tries persuading white, southern clergymen that segregation is an evil, unfair law that ought to defeat by use of agitation of direct protesting. Thoreau, on the other hand, writes to a broader, non-addressed audience, and focuses more on the state itself. He further accepts it at its current state, in regard to the battle with Mexico and the institution of slavery.
It was September 17, 1957 when Reverend. Fred Shuttlesworth and his family were brutally beaten after traveling miles to a Birmingham high school to improve his daughter’s education and create a better overall life for her. They were ambushed by the Ku Klux Klan when they first arrived. The Klan was very barbaric and they beat the Shuttleworth family with brass knuckles, clubs, fists and chains until they were plastered with bruises. This act of racism affected them greatly by showing them that they were not welcome in neither of these two places: their home that they traveled from and any place in the country they potentially could travel to in the future because of their skin pigment.
Many of these people stood up for similar or the same groups. “Must the citizen ever for a moment, or in the least degree, resign his conscience to the legislation?" (Saxby). This quote is from Thoreau’s Civil Disobedience. Thoreau believed that the public was being oppressed by their government and that government stifled free-thinking and free will.
Both Civil Disobedience and the Gandhi article are alike based on the fact they both discuss civil disobedience, attending prison, and standing for one’s beliefs. Civil disobedience can be seen as a good thing and a bad thing depending on to what extent one is breaking the laws. Some people may break the law because they feel that it is unfair to them but others break the for the simple fact of doing what they want in order for it to benefit themselves. Laws are meant for the majority which means even if they are not pertaining to certain citizens. Thoreau targeted laws that pertained to him, Gandhi went on strike for the better of his country and people.
Civil disobedience can mean many things to many people. To some people it could mean a non-violent means of protesting or attempting to achieve political goals; however, in the eyes of people like Martin Luther King Jr it could be different. He stated that “one has the moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws”. Martin Luther King Jr prove this by doing many non-violent protest during his time, to fight against segregation. The meaning of civil disobedience is a bit different in Henry Thoreau’s eyes.
For many years India struggled greatly for their independence. The three major events in the Indian fight against British rule were: the Golden Temple Massacre, the Salt March, and the homespun movement. During the Temple Massacre British and Gurkha troops killed at least 379 unarmed Indians meeting at the Jallianwala Bagh, to discuss nonviolent resistance and protest. However, the British had passed a law that said they were forbidden from encouraging and having meetings about nonviolent protests. The Salt March, which took place in India, was an act of civil disobedience.
Civil Disobedience is an important moral responsibility of a citizen, however it should not get to the level of illegal activity under any circumstances, because great reform can be brought peacefully not violently. In the title named "On Civil Disobedience" by Mohandas K. Ghandi once said: “No country has ever become or will ever become, happy though victory in war”(Mohandas K. Gandhi , 148). Even that long ago, when war was at high, and people embraced it, he knew that the only thing war brought was death, and depression among civilians. This method of civil disobedience has only resulted into more wars, and no real solutions. The most efficient way to the be civilly disobedient is to be peaceful, but willing to stand up for your cause.
When we analyze advertisements, we assume that the only thing being sold is the physical commodity itself. However, advertisements create a relationship between the product the products meaning in order to generate signs to sell the product as well as a cultural connotation we link with the product. This indicates that people are not just consuming the commodity advertised but also acquiring the cultural and social reputation through the signs. Advertisers overemphasize the importance of a product, like in the Lululemon campaign, “The Sweat Life”. Lululemon establishes itself as the brand that promotes comfortable, sweat absorbing, stretchy and strengthened lightweight workout apparel, as well as health, independence, athleticism, coolness,
At the sea, Gandhi picked up a handful of salt. This act went against the British law mandating that they buy salt from their government and this law did not allow them to collect their own salt. That act was made to let the British government know that the Indian people were tired of being under Britain’s rule and they were tired of following all of the unjust laws that were
Gandhi Broke The Salt Law on April 6, 1930, it sparked large as a civil disobedience against The British Raj, Salt laws, over 8000 people were jailed for supporting Gandhi 's beliefs about non violence. The reason I assume this act shows how Civil Disobedience is a Moral Responsibility of the citizen because Gandhi did what he thought was right not only for himself but for others and made a stand for the people of India and broke the law to be heard and now the country of Indian has their Independence because of his actions. Additionally this provides Moral Responsibility since Gandhi thought that Marching with the Indian people his actions would not only be the best for him but for his
