General Winfield Scott, giving fifty-three years of military service with forty-seven of those years being a General, saw many military wars and conflicts. Notably, just four years from entering military service, he served in the War of 1812. He would also see combat in the Black Hawk War, Mexican-American War, Second Seminole War, and the beginning of the American Civil War. The War of 1812 was declared by President Madison on June 1st. President Madison did not like that Britain was interfering with trade nor the attacks on Indians, but the main reasoning to declare war was that British ships were seizing American seaman in American territory (History.com Staff, 2009). At this time, President Polk was in power. Again, the fight was over land and expansionism as was most conflicts during this time. General Scott, with his keen ability to convince the President with his military tactics, led the invasion. This would be the largest American Army to date in history. General Scott had an impressive staff including Robert E. Lee, Ulysses S. Grant, and Thomas J. Jackson, just to name a few (Clemens, 2014). General Scott was successful in battle after battle in Mexico, not completely, but overall. At one point he was forced to remove his army from its supply line so that they could move quickly (Clemens, 2014). Those who marched under him claimed that he was nothing less than brilliant (Clemens, 2014). Eventually, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed and General Scott would return home with the utmost praise and respect. He would be remembered as a strategist who would not go with the norm, but defy odds by thinking outside the box in order to win the battles he
