George Balanchine is an accomplished ballet dancer from the 1900’s. Balanchine began his career in the arts at a very young age. His father was a composer, so he has been influenced by music his whole life. At age five, he began to play the piano, and he continued after he completed his education. When he was nine years old, he enrolled at the Imperial Ballet School in St. Petersburg. He also was in the state’s Conservatory of Music. He studied musical theory, composing, harmony, and piano. This helped him translate music into dance. In 1924, Balanchine and three other dancers left the Soviet Union to tour Western Europe. The other dancers were Tamara Geva, Alexandra Danilova, and Nicholas Efimov. Impresario Sergei Diaghilev invited these four men to audition for Ballets Russes in Paris. They were all accepted. Diaghilev also saw Balanchine’s skills as a choreographer. Diaghilev hired George as ballet master of Ballet Russes. He replaced Bronislava Nijinska. Balanchine served as the master until the death of Diaghilev in 1929. Shortly after the death, George had a knee injury that limited his dance ability. Also after the death, he worked on choreography for the Royal Danish Ballet, a movie with Lydia Lopokova. He also staged dances for Cochran Musical Theatre Revues. ON January 2, 1934, the two of them founded the ballet school. This school is currently still running in New York City. The two of them set up a tour called American Ballet. Later, the Metropolitan Orchestra invited them to be their resident ballet. Balanchine would be the master, but with insufficient funds, he only created two works. In 1938, George left the orchestra.
