On June 25, 1903, one of the world’s greatest authors was born. Eric Arthur Blair, but commonly known today as George Orwell, impacted England’s society through his various works of literature. George Orwell is a name now known around the world, and will continue to be known in the years to come.

George was born in Motihari, Bengal, India to Ida Mabel Limouzin and Richard Walmsley Blair. Richard was a British Civil Servant, when George was born he had just been stationed in India. A year after his birth, Ida brought George and his older sister, Marjorie, back to England. Four years later, Avril Blair was born, but it wasn’t until 1912 (four years after that) did his father retire and get to come home to see her. George published his first book in 1933, Down and Out in Paris. He published the book under the name George Orwell, not wanting to embarrass his parents. At this time George had no money so he did all sorts of odd jobs, one of them he did a lot was dishwashing. In 1934, George Orwell published, Burmese Days.

George Orwell was married to Eileen O’Shaughnessy in June 1936. Later that year, he traveled to Spain and joined a group fighting against General Francisco Franco in the Spanish Civil War. This caused him to get shot in the throat and arm, he could not speak properly for quite a while. In 1938 George was also diagnosed with Tuberculosis, this caused him to take several months to recover. In 1941, George Orwell landed a producing job at the BBC, but soon retired in 1943. One year later, the Orwell’s adopted a son by the name of Richard Horatio Blair, and two years following that Eileen
