Gideon allowed God to determine the size of his army. Gideon began with an army of 10,000 against 100,000, but according to God this was just too many men. God did not want to allow Gideon to fight with so many soldiers, because the temptation would still remain to believe that the actual strength of the army was the winner of the battle. So at this point God gave instructions to Gideon to pare down his army to about 300 soldiers. With a total of 300 this was a way of showing that God would receive all of the praise and credit for the victory. In the Kingdom of God all glory belongs to him. Gideon considered those soldiers to be individuals that would possibly be more aware of the enemies that they would be surrounded by compared to those who kneeled down to drink the water. The lappers where considered the men that was on constant watch to the danger they would be faced with while battling, as they kept their eyes up and watched their surroundings. The other guys that was not looking up and watching their surroundings could be easily attacked. As Children of God it is imperative that we are always battle ready throughout life. Although spiritual dangers will surround us each and every day we must be sensitive by watching and paying close attention. 1 Peter 5:8, “Be sober-minded; be watchful.
