During the Underground Railroad’s time it freed more than 6,000 people. The system ran from about 1780 till the beginning of the Civil War in 1862. The system’s goal was to helps slave escape to Canada to gain their freedom. Many things and people played a role in the system to even get it started. Major people were involved, starting with the Quakers. The Quakers were considered the first people who began the Underground Railroad idea. As time passed more people of all types began getting involved in some way. During this time people like Harriet Tubman helped offer their knowledge and skills. This act was created to return slaves to their owners, because so many people were helping and breaking free. At the time of the Underground Railroad it took major skills, leadership, and major risks to be successful. The Underground Railroad success was based on the people involved, the networks created, and the will of the people. The people involved played a major role in the success and how smoothly the Underground Railroad ran. All types of people were involved including: the Quakers, Harriet Tubman (a main leader), farmers, business owners, ministers, and ordinary black and white people. This idea brought people of all different views together to reach a common goal. These listed people provided the support, supplies, and shelter needed for the escapees. Harriet Tubman was one person who drove for change as well as having a bigger impact on the success. She was a former slave and knew how poorly treated those people were. She wanted change and wanted to be the change. She, herself, returned to slave states 19 times to help more slaves to freedom. By doing this she was able to achieve freedom for more than 300 slaves. He helped more than 400 slaves to Canada to gain their own freedom. With this being said one of the slaves he assisted then returned to help other slaves achieve their dream, freedom. A former slave he helped, Reverend Jermain Loguen, helped 1,500+ slaves go north (History.com Staff). By doing these tasks they were able to help free slaves, who then turned around and risked their lives for other slaves to have the freedom they now possessed. This shows people were thankful to now be free and were inspired to do the same for others. It created a chain reaction that continued to grow. These same people not only helped slaves but also help create the networks to help many people escape the horrors of slavery. The networks created were a major key of success of the Underground Railroad. Many networks created were west through Ohio and Indiana while others were north through Pennsylvania and into New England through Detroit on their way to Canada. To help the slaves find the routes, the key to this to “keep your eye on the North Star,” it was used as a saying to help guide slaves to freedom (History Net Staff). This word became the key watch
