Harriett Tubman, an exceptional woman who was born into slavery in 1822. She escaped slavery as a young adult, which had a strong hold on her throughout her life. However, instead of just running away and leaving America forever, she came back to save other enslaved people despite the risks that there were. I believe that Harriett Tubman's greatest achievement was bringing slaves to freedom, in which she developed the Underground Railroad, brought slaves from the South to the North, and helped with the Combahee River Raid. Tubman is known for all of her work with the Underground Railroad since it was a huge accomplishment. According to Harriett Tubman: The Road to Freedom by Catherine Clinton, the note says "She made most of her trips in and around December when the nights were long and fewer people were out. Typically, Harriet did not venture onto plantations but met fugitives at a prearranged place. When possible, “abductions” began on Saturday nights since slaves generally had a rest day Sundays and would not be missed until Monday morning." This demonstrates how she took many precautions to make sure she could safely bring the slaves to freedom. It also shows that Tubman brought around 38 slaves to freedom in the span of 10 years. Most of this was done through the Underground Railroad. According to Bound for the Promised Land by Kate Clifford Larson, the map shows that Harriett Tubman walked approximately 125 miles with the slaves to bring them to Philadelphia and set them free. The map also shows that she had to walk over 425 miles to Canada after the Fugitive Slave Act which required people in the North to return runaway slaves to their owners.
