Women Fighting for Justice “When you deprive people of their right to live in dignity, to hope for a better future, to have control over their lives, when you deprive them of that choice, then you expect them to fight for these rights.” – Queen Rania Al Abdullah of Jordan. The missions of all of these activists is summed up in this. All of them are strong women who fought for what they believed in: Mother Jones fought for children’s working rights; Harriet Tubman fought for African Americans and racial equality; and Kimberly Bryant is fighting to help get more African American girls into the IT industry. Harriet Tubman risked her life numerous times to save countless people from the tyranny of slavery. Biography.com says that “Tubman risked her life to lead hundreds of family members and other slaves from the plantation system to freedom on this elaborate secret network of safe houses” (“Harriet Tubman”). Harriet Tubman wanted other enslaved people to feel freedom; so even though she was free, she risked getting put back into slavery to help other people. This shows that Harriet Tubman had a very selfless and giving heart and felt that her sacrifice for the cause would make a difference to the world. Her childhood inspired her to help people. Ann Petry says in Harriet Tubman: Conductor on the Underground Railroad that “He [Ben, Harriet’s father] talked about the arrival of the wild ducks, the thickness of the winter coat of muskrats and of rabbits. He was always talking about the woods, the berries that grew there, the strange haunting cries of some of the birds, the loud sound their wings made when they were disturbed and flew up suddenly” (Petry). All of this information Ben taught Harriet allowed her to unconsciously learn how to escape slavery and help others escape as well. Ben also had a giving heart and wanted Harriet to use what he taught her to help others. Ben instilled a giving spirit in Harriet. But even after slavery ended, Harriet still helped people. Biography.com says that “Tubman dedicated her life [after the Civil War] to helping impoverished former slaves and the elderly.” Even after her main goal was accomplished, she still helped people and tried to give them the best lives possible. This proves to everyone that Harriet Tubman had a giving spirit that enabled her to help as many people as she could. Wanting every person in the world to have the best life possible, Harriet Tubman truly had a unique personality that enabled her to help free the slaves in the US and fight for human
