Hello and welcome to horrible Histories with your hos Georgia Austin. Today we will be talking about many interesting topics regarding The Industrial revolution. But, I will be talking to you about one person in particular. This person is a very famous inventer who invented a process for manufacturing steel. It is in fact, Henry Bessemer. Some of the topics we will be discussing today, is Henry Bessemer’s early life, his invention that contributed to the industrial revolution, the significance his invention had and a few fun facts about Henry along the way. Henry Bessemer was born on January 19th, 1813 in Charlton Hertfordshire. Henrys father Anthony Bessemer was an inventor himself. I think it might run in the family! Since a little boy, Henry showed a real interest in engineering and inventing. He taught himself metallurgy which is a branch of science that explores the properties of metals and their production. Henry dropped out of school to partake in following his father’s footsteps. Henrys very first invention he ever made was using brass as a paint additive instead of gold. His process was very beneficial as more railroads were being built, therefore needed steel. Before The Bessemer process, a lot of buildings were built out of bricks or iron but when the Bessemer process came along a lot more buildings were being built in which they used steel as it was a very strong material to use and it was very efficient.
