Jeff Chang, the author of Can’t Stop Won’t Stop decided to place this chapter in his book because he wanted his readers to know the story of DJ Kool Herc as the one who got hip-hop started and tell them how he did it. Kool Herc was essentially the father to hip-hop as he was the one who introduced the roots to this new type of music that was never heard before. Jeff Chang introduces the early life of DJ Kool Herc in the beginning of the chapter. He was born Clive Campbell and moved from Jamaica to the Bronx when he was 12 with his family. He got his musical influence by his dad who was a soundman for a local rhythm and blues band, and by his mom who brought him to house parties as a kid in the Bronx.
Rap DJ Kool Herc, who is the godfather of rap, and his sister Cindy use to through parties for kids who was going back to school. They would use these parties to spark the beginning of a genre. Hip-Hop was born on August 11 1973. One night it hit rap DJ Kool Herc’s. He wanted to do something different.

As he grew up in New York he was surrounded by the sounds and sights of the neighborhood parties called dancehalls, and the smooth sounds produced by the DJ’s, known as toasting.

But during the same era, a man named DJ Kool Herc migrated to the Bronx from Jamaica with what was thought of at the time to be an unusual playlist of R&B, funk, soul and obscure disco. I am also going to talk about what elements where used to create hip hop and how is it possible to identify hip hop. Where did hip hop start? Hip hop was impacted by social changes and many distinctive genres of music. People would rap over songs at parties in the streets or at clubs. "Straight outta Compton" by the group N.W.A. was released and blew the entire rap game out of the water.
Every 30 seconds the heart of hip-hop is dying as the true culture of hip-hip gets blurred. The most popular rapper or rappers in the 1980’s were the notorious gangster rap group N.W.A (Niggaz Wit Attitudes) which consisted of Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Eazy E, MC Ren, and DJ Yella . They were rapping in hip-hop’s “Golden Age” when you had to have real rhymes just to get your record to be played on the radio.
