“Education is best provided in schools embracing children of all religious, social, and ethnic backgrounds.”- Horace Mann Horace Mann was born on May 4th, 1796 in Franklin, Massachusetts. He grew up in a “New Light Calvinist church”, under a reverend named Dr. Nathaniel Emmons. He graduated from Brown University in 1819. He then graduated from Litchfield Law School. In 1837, Horace Mann became secretary of the Massachusetts Board of Education. Horace Mann changed education and the way it looks for many years to come.
While on the Massachusetts Board of Education, Horace changed the way education looks in many different ways. Most of Mann’s policies came from his belief in humanity and society, and their devotion to moral law. From this belief, education let people distinguish the ethical request of natural and moral law. Horace Mann and the Board of Education also wanted to change the material that was to be taught. While on board, Mann increased funding for schools. He had the States take charge of getting teachers prepared for teaching. He sent them to schools to help them get the training they would need to be ready. He also got them support from the community. Mann, also got the State to put libraries in each district, which provided the students with textbooks, he also got the states to gather statistics from each of the schools to try and better them. He wanted States control in the in education and lead the way for more government control in education. He thought that children should get their education free, paid for by local taxes.
