The June 1914 assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand by the Serbian Black Hand Group, caused Austria-Hungary to declare war on Serbia. As their allies got involved this conflict grew into World War I (WWI). This event wasn’t the real cause of the war, it was just the spark that started it. Most people would say the causes were imperialism, nationalism, alliances and militarism.
There were cultural and economic motives for imperialism. First economic, Many countries were industrialized in 1900s, and they needed a lot of materials that they did not have. In order not to depend on others, which nobody wanted, many strong countries started conquering territories and had the necessary materials. Also, followed by the industrialization, population grew as quickly as never before. New jobs were needed and people who were unemployed, left to other countries to find jobs.
How did nationalism cause WW1? 1910-1919 Nationalism was the main cause of World War One. The direct result of it led to the militarization of Europe’s countries, nationalistic feelings in Yugoslavia, and the alliances formed before the war. Despite the common idea that the first world war started because of Archduke Franz Ferdinand’s assassination, it was only a reason for Austria-Hungary to declare war. Nationalism was the driving factor to his assassination, and would not have happened without it.
World War 1 was caused by four main things; militarism, Britain, and Germany building up huge navy and army, for military and size of army increased by 300%. Alliance, for Europe, divided into two sides, the Triple Alliance (Germany, Austria, and Italy), the Triple Entente (Russia, France, and Britain). Hatred and suspicion caused counties to sign treaties with other countries and prepared for war. Imperialism is a policy of extending another country’s power and influence through colonization, use of military force, for example, France and Germany both claimed Morocco. Nationalism, nationalism is when a country is unified and has pride in their country.

The Austro-Hungarian Empire is located in Sarajevo, Bosnia. Black Hand, a Serbian terrorist group, gave weapons to Gavrilo Princip. Princip then took advantage of the archduke’s visit to Germany. Ferdinand was meeting with Kaiser Wilhelm to talk about the unrest in the Balkans.

Europe, being the best at industrialization, globalization, and a great change in technology, was known as a country that dominated the rest of the world. Asia had more people but, Europe was still considered to be the superior, despite being small compared to Asia. However, each country in the war had their strengths.
The United States and Japan were also imperialist powers; however, neither was involved in colonizing Africa. Economical, political, and social causes were the roots of imperialism. Economical causes included materials and markets. Materials were a cause as countries wanted to depend on themselves for raw materials.
