Jacques Louis David “David was an intellectual. His prodigious intellectual interest can be found in all his paintings.” This was a quote from Dorothy Johnson explaining her thoughts on Jacques Louis David (Carrier 731). This statement is true on the ways of how David did his pieces of art work. His upbringing explains how he did some techniques and will be explain later in this essay. He has faced adversity throughout his life and has thrived in learning from experiences. August 30, 1748, in Paris, France, Jacques Louis David was born into a wealthy family. He was raised by his uncles which were architects and was educated at a boarding school after his father past away. When his father past away David was nine and his father was killed from a pistol duel. David’s family wanted him to become an architect, a lawyer, or medicine. This implemented him to become an artist, and studied along the side of Joseph-Marie Vien who soon became another famous artist. During this time, he also continued to work on this art pieces, and his works tend to be biblical and legend paintings (Weikop 700). In his piece, Crucifixion from Life of Christ Series made in 1912, shows his techniques. This is a biblical painting and is about when Jesus was crucified on the cross. The setting is in Jerusalem with Jesus, Mary, soldiers and two other “criminals” that were also being crucified at the time. This painting is theatrical because of the variety of colors in the faces. It was mention about that Nolde came from a poor family, and I believe it did not stop him from being educated. The Crucifixion from Life of Christ Series proves that he knew stories.
