The 1920s, also known as the “Roaring 20s”. This was when everything started getting better, new products and new inventions soared through the roof. However, as soon as 1929 hit, everything went down, including the stock market. This was known as the Great Depression. The Great Depression was a worldwide economic downfall in the stock market that caused harm and difficulty to everyone.
The Great Depression was a time of hardship, businesses failed, unemployment rate sank and nothing seemed to go right, everything went left, for many especially for a man named James J. Braddock. In the movie Cinderella Man, a movie written about a family going through the Great Depression. The Braddock family have been through it all. They have gone from the top to the bottom, and back again. The journey this family faced was excruciating, and painful.
Braddock inspired and gave hope to American citizens during the great depression. Before the Great Depression, James was known as a famous boxer, with fame also came riches. People never thought James would ever be in a situation of debt with the government or in general having money issues. Even how bad the economy was they thought that he was just a stuck up rich person, hoarding all their money, while other people suffer to eat a meal. Yet he was in the exact same position, struggling to keep warm, being unemployed, and not eating real meals.
In the movie, Jim Braddock has many events that challenge his life. He had to seek out work when his boxing license was resigned. Standing at a closed gate amongst many other men, he would wait to be handpicked for a job for that day. This was not enough to bring home the money he needed to provide for his family, but this was the best one could do. In the Great Depression, so many family from the young to the elder were affected.
To begin, the Great Depression took a great toll on the typical American man. Many got fired from their jobs causing unemployment. It was almost impossible to get another job so they were stuck living with no money at all. Not having money caused most men to struggle with bills. Because they couldn’t pay bills they went into debt.

The Roaring Twenties was the time when everyone only cared about happiness, adventures, and freedom. As the years went by, so did the Great Depression. It was a time when everyone became depressed from bank corruption and failure.
Cinderella Man was a story of the up and coming boxer, James J. Braddock. The movie starts off with Braddock in the ring with another fighter and there going neck and neck. But Braddock is the man that has never been knocked out, so he exceeds the fighter for the win. But there is a time, a change in history coming about that Braddock was just another person in a rude awakening for. That change is the Great Depression.
The movie showcased many aspects of the Great Depression talked about in class. Loss of jobs and struggling to support the family was one of them. James Braddock struggled to win fights in order to keep food on the table. Although, after breaking his hand during a match, he was let go from boxing, and ended up having to swallow his pride and file a relief to support his family. Thankfully for James, due to a last minute cancellation they gave him the opportunity to fight again.

Factories were in full swing, using the assembly line to produce goods at an all time high for a price lower than ever. However, the economic boom came to a halt. Factories began producing more than people were buying, creating an overproduction of goods.
During the Gilded age era, America became more affluent and saw unmatched progress both industrially and technologically. Coming with this was the counter as well that consisted of greed, corruption, and politicians being advantageous of the working class. The decade of the twenties, which is deemed as the roaring 20s was an era that pioneered innovation. It also marked social and political change both positively and negatively. It’s safe to that the roaring 20s is comparable and representative of the gilded age, given that both time periods marked prosperity but social conflict(s); The twenties were the new gilded age.
