Jazz Fusion is a style of Music that originated in the late 1960s' and became prominent in the 1970s'. It is the blending of Jazz and Rock Music to create a style of music which contained not only the intricate melodies and refined improvisation that lay in jazz but combined it with the power, instrumentation and rhythm of Rock music. It was not exclusively a mix between Rock and Jazz tho but also combined elements such as also Funk and RnB. This created a Genre of music that Jazz Critics generally hated but Rock Critics Loved. In the 1960s Rock music was becoming more popular and Jazz music was on the decline, this was one of the reasons why Jazz musicians started experimenting with their music, however a lot of Jazz musicians were just simply influenced by rock and wanted to incorporate it into their own music. …show more content…
It is highly regarded that prior to 1967, Jazz and Rock were completely separate genres of music and did not really come into contact with each other. A number of people believe that the first speck of Jazz Fusion was actually a combination of Jazz and RnB, with John McLaughlin as a pioneer of the genre performing with the group: "Georgie Fame and The Blue Flames". It is also regarded that the "Pink Floyd" E.P: London '66-'67 is one of the first examples of Jazz Fusion, where on top of their standard psychedelic style that "Pink Floyd" are known for, they also incorporated improvisation typical of Jazz rather than rock on the E.P. After this, bands such as "The Jimi Hendrix Experience", "Cream" and "Frank Zappa" also incorporated elements of Jazz into their works such as Long free form improvisational passages, unpredictable melodic phrases and standard Jazz instrumentation.
