November 22, 1963. The day that changed the United States and the rest of the World. The day that John F. Kennedy was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald in Dallas, Texas. The assassination of JFK greatly impacted the United States on the way we look at security for our President. John F. Kennedy was shot riding in an open convertible during a parade. He was in Dallas, Texas to campaign for the next Presidential Election. (JFK Library Foundation, n.d.) When JFK was assassinated it changed the way we look at security for our President.
On this tragic day, Jacqueline Kennedy, the First Lady, rode in the car next to her husband. Mrs. Kennedy rarely went with her husband on political outings. Her and Texas Governor John Connally and his wife were also riding in the convertible along with JFK. But on that fatal day there wasn't any agents scanning windows for shooters inside. Today, there are always agents scanning windows and checking out buildings for snipers that are wanting to kill or injure the President. (Dwyer, 2013) Not having anyone scanning the buildings was just another mistake made on the day that President Kennedy was assassinated.
The Secret Service is very focused on preparing for new threats against the President, including: chemical, biological, and radiological weapons, and also explosive devices that are used against the president. The biological weapons that the Secret Service are concerned about are anthrax and ricin because they only take a small amount to cause a lot of harm or even death. (Dwyer, 2013) I feel like it's a good idea that the Secret Service is being mire focused on these threats because with all of the bombings happening around the world lately you never know when the United States could be bombed
