“I have only a short time to live, only one death to die, and I will die fighting for this cause. There will be no peace in this land until slavery is done for.”
This quote was said by John Brown in 1856. This piece of text shows how dedicated John Brown was to abolishing slavery in America. He spent his whole life fighting to free the slaves and also died trying to end all of slavery. John Brown created social change by creating the League Of Gileadites on January 15th, 1851. This was an organization formed to help runaway slaves escape to Canada, where they could be free. 44 people made up this organization and they all wanted to end slavery. John Brown had always had extreme anti-slavery views, due to his family being that way. John even raised his children to have the same views. Another way John Brown caused social change was the Pottawatomie Creek murders. This occurred on May 24, 1856 in Pottawatomie Creek, Kansas. He had moved to Kansas territory at the age of 55 with his 8 sons. He had gathered a small group of men to help him with the murders of 5 unarmed men. John Brown had moved to a farmhouse roughly 4 miles away from Harpers Ferry in Virginia. He gathered and trained 21 army men in the farmhouse and his plan was to capture the Federal Arsenal at Harpers Ferry. He had provided slaves in the surrounding areas with weapons, hoping they’d join the raid. On October 16, 1859, John Brown and his men were finally ready to raid Harpers Ferry. Sadly, nothing went right for John Brown. None of the armed slaves joined the raid and the United States Marines stopped the raid. Almost all of his men died and 2 of his sons were killed. John Brown was found guilty for murder, inciting slave insurrection, and treason against Virginia. He would be hung due to these crimes on December 2nd, 1859 in Charlestown,
