Arthur Miller wrote play The Crucible, which is based on a real story; play begins in a very interesting moment and ends in a very dramatic scene. At the time, when the play was written, witchcraft was a big thing for people. People used witchcraft to accuse other people and take their property, or because they just don’t like them. The story shows us, how do characters have changed from the beginning of the play and until the very end. The Proctor is one of the main characters in The Crucible.

However In “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller. There are Dramatic changes in many characters and their journies. One of the hardest lessons in life is letting go.
I agree that the decision John Proctor made was appropriate because he really did attempt to save his life for his family. He had been locked away in a jail for some several time while being tortured and not able to see his pregnant wife nor children. He confessed to his affair with Abigail to the court, and also confessed to witchcraft which was not true. When he asked Elizabeth what he should do, she told him that “[she] cannot judge” (Miller 135) him. She wanted him living, but she also wanted him to make his own decision.
In Arthur Miller's play The Crucible, John Proctor is ultimately responsible for his own death. While he may have been drawn into the hysteria of the Salem witch trials, it was ultimately his actions and decisions that sealed his fate. One reason why Proctor is responsible for his own death is because of his affair with Abigail Williams. This affair was the catalyst for the witch trials, as Abigail accused Elizabeth Proctor, John's wife, of being a witch in order to get revenge on her. If Proctor had not had the affair in the first place, the chain of events that led to the witch trials may never have occurred.

The House Committee on Un-American Activities’ (HUAC) investigation in the 1950s accused figures who exercised their freedom of speech, leading to mistrust between the citizens and government, thus proving those in power have the tendency to abuse it and citizens must be vigilant in speaking up against the government. HUAC’s role was to investigate communist infiltration in the government and social figures. In the questioning of Arthur Miller, the officials of HUAC believed that since Miller believed it was socially acceptable to write about communism, he was directly supporting and encouraging it. Miller was outraged at this accusation, and expressed to HUAC the fault in their accusation by saying, “You fail to draw a line between advocacy and essence. Our law is based upon acts, not thought”.
The Salem witch trials were a time period when any individual could be accused of witchcraft for numerous reasons. In The Crucible, Arthur Miller focuses on the deviation of the trials and how the town’s most religious and honest members of the community are tried with witchcraft. John Proctor, the town’s most honest man, is accused of being a witch and must decide if he should confess or not. Proctor’s confession will stop the town from rebelling and uphold the reputations of Deputy Governor Danforth and Reverend Parris. Hale also wishes for Proctor’s confession so he does not have to feel responsible if Proctor were to be hanged for his witchcraft accusations.
This shows that John is a merciful being and desires forgiveness from his wife and God, therefore demonstrating traits of a good man. Furthermore, John has a heated argument with his wife, due to his encounter with Abigail, alone. Although, he thinks his wife will doubt him, she states on the contrary, “I do not judge you. The magistrate sits in your heart that judges you. I never thought you but a good man, John - only somewhat bewildered” (55).
The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, is about real life events that has been changed a bit by the author. The play is set back in 1692 in Salem, Massachusetts, were the Salem Witchcraft Trials were going on. The Witchcraft Trials were trials that mostly girls, but some men got accused of seeing the devil and doing work for him. If you were accused of being a witch you were to admit to seeing the devil, accuse other people, or you would get hung. Some people wouldn 't admit to being a witch just to save their life because of their faith in Jesus.
He explains to the court that Abigail is involved with his crime, adultery. He admits to Danforth that he had an affair with Abigail during his marriage with Elizabeth. Although he confessed, he wasn’t straightforward when he did but sadly Danforth knew exactly what he meant. John yells, “It is a whore! – I have known her sir, I have known her” (110).
People in the Crucible thought he was an honorable man and that no honorable man will ever sin. So when John and Abigail meet each other, Abigail flirts with John, and John say, “No, no, Abby. That’s done with.” So we know he has committed adultery against his wife, Elizabeth Proctor, with Abigail Williams and that gives us a bad image of John sinning and commiting adultery with Abigail and doesn’t really respect his wife.
In The Crucible, the protagonist John Proctor was. In the town of Salem, in 1692, a group of young ladies by the names of Betty Williams, Abigail Williams and Tituba were found dancing in the forest naked by Reverend Parris, Abigail’s’ uncle. Reverend Parris assumed that they were participating in witchcraft. This idea of witchcraft spread through the city of Salem and the citizens began accusing each other of being witches. This started a series of court cases known as the Salem Witch Trials.
John could have used this opportunity to get revenge on Abigail. Instead he makes the honorable decision to personally redeem himself from his previous mistakes. Earlier in the play he claimed that Mary and the girls were “God damn all liars” (Miller 117). This quote demonstrates John judging people for their sins, which is exactly what he claimed he does not do. It shows a dramatic change in his character, a change in personal
John confesses to adultery in court to try to save Elizabeth when she is accused of witchcraft. By doing this, he is confessing to a serious sin. In this society, the church and government are one. This means that he could face a death sentence. He also confesses prove Abigail’s motive to kill Elizabeth and to expose her and save others from being accused by her.
In the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller, John Proctor was accused of witchcraft. John Proctor was a man of great integrity and knew he did nothing wrong. He was given the choice to confess and lie or be hung. Being the honest and stubborn man that he was, he decided his name was more important than his life. John struggled both internally and with others while trying to fight for what he thought was right.
