Puritan society in early america was very strict. It was not desired to wear fancy clothing or own fancy household things. Being plain was looked upon as normal.The Crucible is a story beginning in Salem Massachusetts in 1692 during a time where witch hunts begin to erupt all over early America. John Proctor the main character is a well respected man throughout the community but his flaw is he had an affair with the Antagonist of the story, Abigail Williams. Abigail uses this power throughout the court by accusing people and going to extreme measures to prove herself. In the Crucible, written by Arthur Miller, makes characters change from beginning to end based on certain events.

To begin with, the Crucible is about courage. John Proctor went against his will to testify as a God willing man. He refused to lie when he was accused of witchcraft by Abigail Williams. This showed that John Proctor is a strong man and he stands up for what is right rather than confessing and being let to live (Miller 119). “His breast heaving, his eyes staring. When she tries and accuse Elizabeth Proctor everyone believes her because of the poppet that was found at the proctor House. “We have proof of it sir, they are all deceiving you” ( Miller 71). This is when Judge Danforth is explaining his power to Francis Nurse trying to persuade him that he is right and is not deceived. A final example of deceit and truth is the naked dancing in the woods. The girls say that they did dance but they did not dance naked, whereas Parris said they did dance naked only to have the girls confess and have them not be convicted of witchcraft (Miller
