Brenda Gomez Ms. Jorlando World History 1 March 2023 Joseph Lister During the 17th hundreds, the Industrial Revolution had a significant impact on society that would change the lives of Great Britain forever. It was the moment machinery was born for the first time. Great Britain had all the necessary resources to industrialize, which caused it to develop first. Many factories were built, and people started discovering new ways of life which improved the way they lived. Inventors came up with machines to help speed up the industrial process which would eventually replace the cottage system. Great Britain had many educated men, making these inventions possible. One of the many inventors was Joseph Lister. Joseph Lister invented antiseptic surgery which avoided the wound to get infected and lead to a person’s death; greatly impacting society because it tremendously decreased the number of deaths during and after a surgical procedure. British inventor, Joseph Lister, was born on April 5, 1827, in Upton, England to a Quaker family. He attended two Quaker schools and by the time he was 16, he decided to pursue his career as a surgeon. For college, he attended the University College of London and by 1847, he received his degree with a concentration in Botany. By 1852, he received his medical degree with honors. His discovery decreased the mortality rate and changed the way the medical field would work forever. Although many were skeptical about his methods, Lister proved them wrong, and they quickly accepted his methods throughout the world. Lister refined his technique and received lots of honors for his hard work. In 1879, Listerine mouthwash was named after him to honor his work (Watts). Lister is claimed as a pioneer for many in the medical field (Crowther). He will forever be considered the father of modern surgery
