Joseph Stalin is well known for ruling the Soviet Union for many years. He created a reign of terror as he was trying to modernize Russia and defeating Hitler. He was born on December 18, 1879 in Gori, Georgia and his real name was Iosif Vissarionovich Dzhugashvili. At the beginnings of the 1900s, he called himself Joseph Stalin after the word “stalin” which means steel in Russian. Since a young age, he was treated cruelly by other children from the village, which made him feel inferior. As a result, he began to look for greatness and respect, plus a great hate for anyone who crossed with him. When he was an adult, he became involved in revolutionary movements against the monarchy ruling Russia. Stalin did a great change trying to modernize and industrialize Russia. Furthermore, he actually converted Russia into a world superpower. In the 1930s, Stalin decided to change the Bolshevik agrarian policy, because he believed in collectivism and its help to increase food production. However, the peasants lost their lands given by the Bolshevik revolution and were turned into collective farms. A huge success for the country but not its citizens, was the rapid industrialization which improved the economy in comparison to previous decades. During his leadership, he strictly extracted money from the rich peasants, and restrained the food consumption for the rest of the citizens in order to increase the finances used for industrialization. Restraining food, according to Stalin, was a way of making sure the capital was re-invested.
