In Europe it was a time of social and economic unrest, until William the Conqueror brought the feudalistic system over. Knights in the medieval ages played a critical role in the feudalistic system. Feudalism is a social hierarchy system which William the Conqueror brought to Europe. Knights support feudalism because they exchange fighting in wars with land ownership. Knights critically helped the feudal system in wars and in manors. A knights defenses, clothing, and armor are an important part of their job. Knights wore many different kinds of clothes while in battle. Knights wore long, hooded coats, and surcoats, a surcoats main purpose was to protect the knights from the sun. (Walker 18). Early knights wore chainmail, chainmail is a kind of lightweight, metal armor that knights wear around their body instead of a full suit of armor. Most archers wore chainmail because it was lightweight, and allowed them to move more slick with the bow and arrow (Walker 18). Knights used many different kinds of weapons in war, different knights had different jobs in the battlefield. The king of the manor gave fiefs to nobles, barons, and bishops, if they gave him soldiers for the army (Feudal Life). Feudalism usually takes place in areas where there were manors. A small community around a central lord or master is a manor (Feudal Life). A manor contained a castle, a church, a village, and nearby farmland (Feudal Life). The feudalistic system in the medieval ages insured that serfs, nobles, vassals, lords, and kings, get and gave what they needed
