How Did Leonhard Euler Contribute To The World

714 Words3 Pages

Mathematicians are people who have an extensive knowledge of math and apply it to their line of work. It is very important to have mathematicians and generally mathematics in our world because it has to do a lot with the way figure things out in the world. There are many mathematicians who contributed to the world of mathematics and without them, mathematics would not be what it is today. One well know mathematician, that made a huge contribution to the math field, is Leonhard Euler. Leonhard Euler is a mathematician from Switzerland who made influential discoveries to the world of math. Leonhard Euler was the son of protestant minister Paul Euler and Margaret Brucker. Leonhard Euler was born in Basel, Switzerland, but had moved to Riehen …show more content…

The way he went about to the Eulerian path was trying to figure out the “Königsberg bridge” problem (Rhishikesh, n.d.). The “Königsberg bridge” problem asked if it was possible to cross all seven bridges in the “Königsberg bridge” all at once. Euler came to the conclusion that it was not possible to cross the bridge at once through graph theory (Rhishikesh, n.d.). Eulerian did this by determining the degree of node. Eulerian figured that it was not possible because the only way to go through any given graph only once is if the graph had zero or two nodes and odd number of degrees, this is now known as the Eulerian Path (Rhishikesh, n.d.). Then he figured that if a graph has a two or more nodes and has an even degree, then it is a Eulerian Circuit (Rhishikesh, n.d.). This contribution is important because it figured out the problem through graph theory, rather than actually demonstrating the problem (Rhishikesh, n.d.). A modern application of this problem would be something like trying to travel the world, but without visiting each region more than once. The way one would approach this problem is trying to gather all the regions and determining if it is a Euelerian path. If it is a Eulerian path, that means that the path created from connecting all the regions need to have zero or two nodes and an odd number of degrees. IF it is
