Jazz has shaped the world we know today. Jazz would have never been as popular without the help of the famous musicians: Jelly Roll Morton, Joe King Oliver, Sidney Bechet, Louis Armstrong, and Duke Ellington. These people helped spread the new genre through radio, railroads, and the records that they played. Where did this all start? The jazz age began in New Orleans where a certain King was born.

We all know that someone had to be the founder and the most influential person in Jazz, I call him the godfather of jazz,Louis Armstrong, nicknamed Satchmo, Pops as in the father of jazz and, later, Ambassador Satch because brought in new methods to the jazz community. Louis was born in 1901 in New Orleans, Louisiana. An all-star virtuoso, he came to prominence in the 1920s, influencing countless musicians with both his daring trumpet style and unique vocals. These were some of the most famous jazz musicians of all time. Starting with louis armstrong, louis armstrong rose to fame in the 1920s, his mentor was joe king oliver in 1919. Oliver left louis to fill in hi spot in one of the best jazz bands in new orleans. Soon word spread throughout the city about louis armstrong's fantastic music. Next is jelly roll morton, he was the first great composer of jazz he was also one of the first jazz musicians to travel the country and spread the “new orleans sound”.
Arguably one of the very best is Louis Armstrong. Known to be well versed in not only trumpet but also vocals and even composition. Louis Armstrong inspired many people across a wide range. He was so actively involved in everything going on around him. He was one of the only African American musicians who spoke up against political issues, he publically talked about the wrongness of school segregation (Harris).
Throughout Armstrong’s career he had numerous achievements and awards. In 1936 Louis Armstrong became the first African- American to appear in a major Hollywood film “Pennies from Heaven”, with his friend Bing Crosby. That same year Armstrong became the first Africa-American jazz musician to write an auto-biography,” Swing That Music”. By 1937 he became the first Africa-American to host a nationally sponsored radio show. In 1949 TIME magazine paid tribute to Armstrong, making him the very first jazz musician to ever grace the cover.
Jazz was born in New Orleans about 100 years ago (early 20th century), but its roots can be found in the musical traditions of both Africa and Europe. In fact, some people say that jazz is a union of African and European music. Most legends are known for excelling in a specific field or for doing something so impactful on the world that they will be remembered for ages. What set Louis Armstrong apart from others considered to be legends is that he did this multiple times throughout his life and with ease.
