The Harlem Renaissance was a time period where African American culture greatly influenced many aspects of life, especially in the creative arts. The Harlem Renaissance produced many talented and successful artists, writers, and musicians. These notable figures in history helped bring about changes in American society, through new and unique innovations. During his time, many singers were praised for being able to sing loudly and clearly. However, Armstrong’s singing style consisted of scat-singing, which contrasted greatly with how others sang their songs. Scat-singing is the use of random syllables, instead of actual words while singing. This method added a new beat and rhythm to music. It also introduced and helped to further the development of improvisation in music. While playing with a group of musicians, Armstrong incorporated improvisation into extended solos, which were another concept he popularized. Armstrong also helped to break the barrier between blacks and whites at the time. For example, he played music at the Cotton Club, which was a club for whites only. Despite the fact that African Americans introduced jazz music to the whites, the genre became extremely popular, almost immediately.
