The story of Macbeth is set in Scotland in the 11th century. The story is of a Scottish nobleman called Macbeth who receives a prophecy that he will become king, but the sons of his friend Banquo will have a dynasty, not Macbeth. Throughout the play, Macbeth gains and maintains his power through deceit and murder and was until may be overthrown by one of Banquo's sons. We know this by the line (Shakespeare Act 1, Scene 3) ‘Everyone Did Bear Thy praises in his kingdom’s great defense’. By this line, we can see that Macbeth was seen as a hero after fighting in his kingdom's defense during a rebellion. To top things off in (Shakespeare Act 1, Scene 3) we again see that Macbeth was made Thaine of Cawdor. Things went wrong when Macbeth decided to control the future by killing king Duncan and making himself king. This causes a paradox if Macbeth did nothing and became king then it was his destiny but if he did nothing and did not become king then the witch's prophecy is not a prophecy but a siren call trying to lure Macbeth to lose all he has gained.
