The Assassination of Mahatma Gandhi

Mahatma Gandhi was a powerful leader admired by many. He did many things for his country. Unfortunately, he was assassinated by a man by the name of Nathuram Godse on January 30, 1948 in New Delhi. The assassination of Mahatma Gandhi was unjustified because even though Godse disagreed with Gandhi’s actions, Gandhi was an inspirational leader, gave India independence, and risked his life to help others. Godse mentioned in his book named Why I Assassinated Mahatma Gandhi that, “I do say that my shots were fired at the person whose policy and action had brought rack and ruin and destruction to millions of Hindus.” Nathuram disagreed with many of Gandhi’s decisions saying that he brought “rack and ruin and destruction to millions of Hindus.” However, Gandhi actually helped Hindus. He got them their independence and got many out of poverty. Even Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan, said Gandhi was a heart Hindu leader. (How Did Gandhi Impact Hinduism?) Mahatma was accused of being too Hindu, not being Hindu enough, or trying to destroy the Hindu social structure. This is because even though Godse disagreed with Gandhi’s actions, Gandhi was an inspirational leader, gave India independence, and risked his life to help others. Powerful civil rights leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela, have credited Gandhi as a source of inspiration in their struggles to achieve equal rights for their people. The British leaders had acknowledged him as a force they could not get rid off or ignore and India’s independence was finally granted in August 1947. Gandhi risked his life many times and fasted to show a message to the British to get what India deserved,
