The Fall from Fame Marshal Mathers, better known as Eminem, is an international best selling hip hop artist. With over 172,000,000 albums sold, six out of eight of them being number one bestsellers, you would think his life is pretty easy. However, he faced a great deal of incredible obstacles throughout his career with both his family and himself. He has gone through divorce, been sued by his family, been on probation, and struggled with a deeply unhealthy relationship with prescription medications. Eminem’s drug addiction was so severe that it almost took his life (Eells). Yet, he overcame these obstacles and continues to make music today. He was introduced to a new drug, methadone, while looking for Vicodin. Eminem wasn’t sober once the whole month of December leading up to the overdose. His overdose on methadone was equivalent to four bags of heroin, and he was only two hours away from death. He was admitted to the hospital and stayed for a week, checking himself out on Christmas morning. His muscles were incredibly weak from the detoxification process and Mathers tore his meniscus; causing him to go back to the hospital for knee surgery. However, his efforts were futile because he relapsed within a month of being out of the hospital (Eells). Eminem knew he had to be there for his daughter, Hailie, and his niece, Alaina. Marshal has joint custody with Kim over Hailie, but due to her drug use and jail time she lived primarily with her father. He knew that you cannot raise a child correctly unless you’re there to teach and care for them. These two little girls were the main reason Mathers cleaned up his act in the first place. He had to be sober to teach his girls right from wrong and other basic morals, and try to let them learn from his mistakes
