Martha Graham was a world famous modern dancer and choreographer from the twentieth century. Graham was special to any other dancer in her time, she created her very own unique difficult technique style which changed the dance community's perspective on modern dance. Graham choreographed her works through themes and ideas that were quite personal and related to issues in her time. The technique style Graham created was a whole new language in dance. She developed the motion of ‘contraction and release’ which was based on the concept of breathing. All of her pieces has developed modern dance further and her technique style still exists today.

Martha Graham was famously known for her own individual unique and creative technique style that was different than anything in her time. Through Martha's time she choreographed 181 pieces in her lifetime and many of them left a mark in history. Her works were often dramatic, powerful, expressive and thrilling which left a huge impact in modern dance history. Graham’s remarkable and most famous choreographies consist of Lamentation, Appalachian Spring, Frontier, and also Seraphic Dialogue. Every single one of these pieces apply the famous Delsartean principles use of tension and relaxation. Graham called this “contraction and release.” Contraction and release was used in many of Graham's works which illustrated her special vision of dramatic trembling movement, which were strong and sharp.
