Martin Luther King Jr. was a well known and respected civil rights activist and baptist church pastor in Montgomery, Alabama. He led his fellow African Americans into greatness. Dr. King advocated for peaceful approaches and non-violence protesting, which was a thing that not a lot of people did in protests in America at the time. Dr. King was inspired by Gandhi's work and his teaching of nonviolent resistance. He believed in the significance of love as the ultimate goal of justice and equality.
His speaking skills were influential. He impacted and influenced others by using metaphor and appeal, he was able to get close to his audience and evoke emotions to them which helped him impact them. “Martin Luther King Jr. spoke to more than 200,000 people from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom” (“Facts for Features: The 50th Anniversary of the "I Have a Dream'' Speech and the March on Washington for Jobs and Freed''). They were willing to be hurt in order to prove their point, they were not guaranteed safety. Although he advocates peaceful protesting, they were getting hurt and threatened by others. Dr. King understood the power of making his listeners feel strong emotions during his speech. “In his speaking, King allowed himself to have an almost symbiotic connection with his audience” (Eblin). Dr. King and his audience were tuned into the same level of energy. This connection made the event more than a speech. He also encouraged his audience to take action towards a better future. His speech was powerful because of the firm belief in racial equality, civil rights and justice for all. Dr. King was also a master at using repetition, “I have a dream” again and again. This makes it easy for him to make his main point and it helps the audience recognize the importance of his message and it also makes it easier for the audience to come along with him.
