“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.” –Martin Luther King Jr stated. In other words, no matter what you look like, your beliefs, etc, everyone everywhere should be treated equally and freedom to all. In Martin Luther King Jr’s “I Have a Dream” speech, that was the point he was trying to get across. King uses rhetorical appeals and figurative language to persuade the audience that equality and freedom should be for everyone.

He was a leader with great power who could persuade people to come together and seek a higher good. He believed in joining all Indians under a single nation. His charisma was to gather many of the tribes together to negotiate for Indian land with the settlers.
In 1963 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. protested the racial segregation in Birmingham and got arrested. While he was in jail he read a newspaper and 8 white clergymen stated their opinion of him. That inspired his Letter From Birmingham Jail. After he got out he continued to protest and he wrote his I Have a Dream Speech. He spoke in front of about 10,000 people in Washington DC.
Martin Luther King Jr. was a leader in the African American Civil Rights movement in the 1960s, he was known for his nonviolent movements and methods of protesting. This involved many African American citizens to take verbal and physical abuse from the police and not being able to do anything about it. He used his words to inspire the nation into taking action, instead of promoting violence. Dr. King gave his “I Have a Dream” speech in front of thousands of United States citizen from all different backgrounds at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington. Kings uses ethos to point out why segregation was unjust and to justify why African Americans deserves the same rights as the white citizens of the United States.

This letter, known as “Letter From Birmingham Jail”, was written as a response to criticism received from eight clergymen regarding the protest that King was arrested for. In that same year, King gave a powerful speech to a large crowd gathered in Washington D.C., at the Lincoln Memorial. This speech, easily recognized as the “I Have a Dream” speech, addressed the cruelty of segregation and unfair ways of which most people were treated, and influenced hope within his audience. In these two writings, examples of both logos and pathos can be found, and although the writings are comparable, they are not completely the same.

Martin Luther King 's speech is still relevant today because all races are not yet equal. Although racism and segregation have somewhat "improved" from 1963 until now we can still see clear signs today that racism and inequality still exists. The idea of change and equality that Martin Luther King and other activists fought for was just the beginning of a revolution that has not yet ended. King expresses in his speech, that in order for us to achieve true freedom we need to be able to work together, pray together, and stand up for freedom together knowing that one day we will all be free. King states that we should not be comfortable with the idea of gradualism, where we gradually achieve a change, but we should make a change now.
Linguistic analysis of Martin Luther King 's 'I Have a Dream ' speech, and Abraham Lincoln 's 'Gettysburg Address ' I have chosen to investigate the use of linguistic devices and how they are used to persuade the audience. I will study a spoken form of language, as I think the spoken mode illustrates emotion better than a written mode. The speech I have chosen to study was spoken by Martin Luther King in 1963, and has been given the popular name of 'I Have a Dream '. I will also look at the Gettysburg address, spoken by Abraham Lincoln in 1863, as this links in closely with Martin Luther King 's ideals, and is referred to in his speech. Nothing is more frustrating than someone not taking us seriously. Know what I’m talking about? You know when you’re around some older men or a group of unfamiliar guys and you try to add some value to the conversation? You speak and they all look at you like you’re five years old. You could have recited a section from Plato’s Republic or MLK’s “I Have A Dream” speech and their reactions would have been the same.
