It’s February 8, 1587 and this is the day the Queen of Scots is getting executed. The executioner lifts his axe. How did the great queen end up in this moment? All throughout the Renaissance time period monarchs around the globe were known various times for having a challenged personal life or being known as an incredible leader. For instance, some monarchs even procured having several wives from beginning to end in their lifetime. Meanwhile, a prominent and controversial leader was Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots. But, what was she known for? Throughout her era, Mary Stuart experienced a very different childhood, a turbulent political life, and a difficult time in England that shaped her as a person throughout her life. After she fled to England, Mary was imprisoned by her cousin Elizabeth who she was meeting for the first time. After awhile the queen was not allowed to go outside or have any contact with her son, James. (Benson) During her imprisonment she was involved in the Throckmorton plot, which would mean killing Elizabeth and making Mary the English queen. She sent letters to Francis Throckmorton and didn't receive any retaliation for her actions. (Benson) Additionally, Mary participated in the Babington plot which she sent letters back in forth with Anthony Babington. After the Babington plot Elizabeth signed Mary’s execution warrant and she was put on trial for plotting against the queen. Then, Mary was convicted and found guilty, so she was sentenced to death the following year. (Grendler) At 44 years old, Mary was executed on February 8, 1587 after 18 years of imprisonment.
