“Prejudice is a burden that confuses the past, threatens the future and renders the present in accessible.” Maya Angelou is one of the most inspirational and influential figure of black history month. Her writings not only told the real, sad truth of how African American women were treated in the United States, but teaches a lesson that everyone must learn from. Maya Angelou inspires through her history, obstacles and achievements and her contribution to society. In St. Louis Missouri, on April 4, 1928, Marguerite Annie Johnson was born into a world where racism and discrimination were a major issue, but it did not stop her. She went to school at George Washington high school California Labor school. Maya Angelou then became an author and civil rights activist poet, having 12 best selling books. She went onto being one of the few inspirational African Americans of all time. When Maya was little so many events happened throughout her life. At the age of 3 her parents got divorced, so she had to live with her grandma most of her life. A few years later at the ages of 8, Maya Angelou was raped by Mr. Freeman, who was Maya’s mother’s boyfriend. This occurrence caused Maya to become silent, since she saw how Mr. Freeman’s death happened because she spoke out about what he did to her. When Maya was 17 years old, she gave birth to Guy Johnson in San Francisco. She had to move in with her grandmother again in Stamps, Arkansas, but had to go back to San Francisco and live with her mother. She had to leave her son, but eventually reunited later on in life. Being an African American she had to deal with racism. When she was living with her grandma, she was bullied by girls, but she did not care. Maya Angelou was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize and also won the award for Presidential Medal of Freedom. She shows
