763 Words4 Pages

Good Morning. We are here today to determine if Mayella Ewell was telling the truth when she testified at the trial of Tom Robinson. There are no excuses for not telling the truth. Mayella claimed she was attacked and raped by Tom Robinson. I will prove that Mayella was not telling the truth and that it was her father, Robert Ewell, who attacked and raped her that day. On the day in question, Mayella claimed she asked Tom Robinson to help her and that she would pay him a nickel. She claims that when she went inside to get a nickel, Tom followed her into the house, grabbed her, threw her down on the floor, and raped her. She claims she fought and screamed while the attack happened. She has seven siblings that were playing at the dump, which …show more content…

I would say because she was not screaming and fighting, or it was not the first time her siblings heard what was going on. When asked if she loved her father, her answer was “he is tollable, except when”- It was found out that the Ewelle family does not have much in the way of home life, and any money they get goes to Mr. Ewell and drinks. When asked if her father, when he was riled, had ever beaten her, she answered "No, he never touched me”. Mayella was not asked if he touched her, but if he beat her. Mayella’s answer of “he never touched me” to a question that wasn’t asked indicates she is protecting her father from what he was doing. I asked Mayella if she remembered Tom beating her in the face. First, she answered, “No, I don’t recall that he hit me. I mean yes I do, he hit me. Yes he hit – I just don’t remember.it happened too quickly”. You, the jury, can fill in the end of that sentence. He is tollable “cept when he’s not drunk and beating and raping his daughter”. The defense is going to say the attack traumatized her. She was so scared she just doesn’t remember. She may not remember some details of the attack, but getting punched in the face, you would remember. The defense might say, she’s protecting her father. That, if it was her father that raped and attacked her, she and her siblings would have no home. She was too scared to lose what little she had. It is not her job to protect her father or provide for the family. And finally, the defense may tell you that Mayella is uneducated and her mind is more childlike than her nineteen years. Mayelle is nineteen and a half years old, almost 20. She knows right from wrong as shown by her trying to protect her father. Mayella is a nineteen-and-a-half-year-old young adult who knows the difference between telling the truth and lying. She may not have caring parents, a nice house, or an extended education, but that is not an excuse. You can not lie in a court of law. Her decision to commit perjury caused the death of another
