Meriwether Lewis was a big contribution to the success of the United States. He went on an expedition with William Clark to explore the “riches” of the recently purchased Louisiana. After his expedition, he was appointed the governor of Upper Louisiana. But he ran into financial issues when he was never paid for his work as governor and his journals. So he took a trip to Washington DC to rectify his financial situation, but that was when his life was cut short. On October 11, 1809 he was found in his room with two guns in his room and he was later pronounced dead. Based on evidence in the crime report, he was killed by suicide. According to “Theories and Interpretations of Meriwether Lewis’ death” it says that he suffered to periodic spells of depression by personal problems after the expedition. He also had a physical disease that causes deterioration of his mind and body. Malaria causes strong pain in the abdomen, chills, fever, sweating, muscle aches, diarrhea. The reason why that wouldn’t make sense is because he had no money to get robbed for and the only thing that he had in his room was a rug, his saddle, the two guns, and his water basin. There wouldn’t be anything to steal that would be valuable. Another motive for a “murder” is it was a murder by a jealous husband. Mrs. Grinder claimed in her testimony that it was only Lewis and her in the building at the time of his death. Even the servants weren’t in the house. So Mr. Grinder wouldn’t even be able to shoot him. Mr. Grinder also claimed that he saw Mrs. Grinder and Lewis together.
