In the novel The Great Gatsby, we slowly learn about the character’s past and how much they have changed throughout their lives by the narrator, Nick Carraway. We are also informed as to how some characters like Daisy, Gatsby, and Nick himself climbed their way to the very top of the social class. In this novel, Jay Gatz is the main example as to how his past affected him positively regarding his attitude towards life. Jay Gatz’ past is a very important feature in his character, for it is responsible as to how his life resulted to be. Gatz was just a teenager when he left his home to find a better future, he realized that he wanted to have a better life and not just an ordinary one. He left for college in order to receive an education, but in order to do so, he had to pay his way through college by working as a janitor. Ironically, Jay Gatz only tolerated two weeks of college. It seems as if his motivation was not enough to hit the books or withstand working as a janitor to pay for college. Dan Cody was very rich, but his only problem was alcohol, Jay Gatz learned from him and never wanted to become like Dan Cody with binge drinking. Jay Gatz was inspired by this man and even changed his identity from Jay Gatz to Jay Gatsby. As we look back in the novel, we can make a connection with how Nick illustrated Gatsby in one of his own parties when he first saw Gatsby.
