Friedrich Nietzsche was a German philosopher in the 19th century. Nietzsche is known for his works and views about music, history and religion. Some of Nietzsche’s work includes “The Gay Science” and “The Birth of Tragedy”. In this paper I will discuss the many ideas of Friedrich Nietzsche and his views on philosophy.
Nietzsche was born on October 15th 1844 in a small German town just a few miles away from the city of Leipzig. At a very young age Nietzsche father died due to sickness in the brain, which left his mother to raise Nietzsche and his siblings alone (Frenzel 9). Because Nietzsche was the oldest man in his household, he grew up with a world mainly consisting of women. When Nietzsche was a little boy he moved from his farm and into a crowded house in Naumburg where he went to elementary school (Frenzel 12). In high school Nietzsche started to have doubts about religion and god. “His doubts in and ultimate rejection of Christianity developed gradually … his loss of faith, probably one of the most crucial events of his adolescence (Frenzel 16)”. Nietzsche went to Bonn for his undergraduate studies but he later transferred to Leipzig. At Leipzig Nietzsche became a loner and focused mainly on his schoolwork (Frenzel 25). While at Leipzig, Nietzsche joined the military, but his military career was cut short when he fell off a horse and had a chest injury (Frenzel 33). In 1868 Nietzsche became an associate professor at the University of Basel. A year later at the age of twenty-four the University of Leipzig gave Nietzsche a Ph.D. and he because a full time professor (Frenzel
