One would think that the man, who saved many lives by decreasing starvation all over the world and becoming the father of The Green Revolution, would be a well-known name. Yet, many people today know nothing about Norman Borlaug and The Green Revolution. Mr. Borlaug’s discoveries took place shortly after the Great Depression. People were starving because of the inability to produce wheat in certain countries due to rough environmental conditions and certain insects. Borlaug was well known for producing new strains of wheat that could grow and survive in harsher conditions.

He continued to cross strand after strand of wheat. Borlaug moved his family down to Mexico and made a long-term commitment (Biography). He eventually discovered the characteristics the wheat needed to survive, and crossed dwarf wheat from Japan with North American semi-dwarf strand. This made the wheat have a thick, stronger stalk and was ideal for Mexico’s needs. More than 95 percent of the wheat harvested in 1965 was seed developed by Borlaug (Singh).
South Asia soon became desperate for a new strand of wheat and came close to famine. Borlaug temporarily moved to South Asia to try to discover a new strand of wheat that could grow well there. Borlaug succeeded his mission by importing some of the Mexican wheat seeds that he had previously created and planting them in South Asia. Within a single season, South Asia’s food production was better than ever before (Singh).
Borlaug’s seeds and techniques for spreading seeds spread from Mexico and South Asia to Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, Indonesia, continental South America and Africa. Borlaug affected the world with his new strand of wheat and some planting methods to produce a better outcome (Singh). Around the world infant mortality rates fell and life expectancy rose.
