Edgar Allan Poe was an extremely talented American writer and is very well known for his short stories and poetry. His literary work was often centered on Gothic fiction and he chose to pursue this genre because it satisfied the public readers. Poe was born in 1809, his father abandoned the family shortly after in 1810 and his mother died in 1811, leaving him orphaned at a very young age. John Allan and his wife Frances Allan decided to take Poe in and although they never legally adopted him, he lived with them until he was an adult. In his adulthood, Poe and John Allan tended to argue quite a bit over money problems and lack of money eventually became the reason that Poe had to drop out of the University of Virginia. Poe and Allan reached a truce after the death of Frances Allan in 1829 but when Poe couldn’t cut it as an officer cadet and professed his desire to pursue his career as a poet and writer, his truce with John Allan came to a halt and they eventually went their separate ways. For the next several years, Poe focused on his writing and published multiple short stories and poems. One short story that he wrote was titled “The Cask of the Amontillado”. The genre of this story was horror and the plot is about a vengeful man who is burying someone alive who he believes has slandered him. Throughout the story Poe includes both humor and horror to create the setting. Montresor, who is the man that is seeking revenge against Fortunato, leads him to believe that they are friendly towards one another and then encourages him to follow him to his death, which Fortunato is completely unaware of.
