Rap music began as early has the 1920s starting out with just words. A man by the name of Charlie Patton started rap with the song, “Shake it Break it.” Also it began in non-African American music. In the 1960s and 1970s was when rap music started becoming more common. It showed up at parties just as words rhyming with no beats. It didn’t become a well-known Genre until the late 1970s. Rap music was still treated with respect in the music industry at the time. If you were to go to a record store with all types of Genres of music, you would have to look under R&B/Soul to get records for Rap. Dre and in 1999 he came out with his second album, Slim Shady LP, which he won his first Grammy award for best Rap album. It became a huge success; he sold over three million copies. In the same year, Eminem’s first single, “My Name is,” was a twist on Rap, as people exclaimed. It was different from anything else. Now in May 2000, he released his third studio album, The Marshall Mathers LP, this album showed Eminem’s poetic side and every aspect of his life, from funny, heartbreaking, violent, to compassionate. This song sold over 19 million copies worldwide and he won another Grammy award then, he was nominated for album of the year. The Marshall Mathers LP was considered one of the greatest Rap albums of all time. After 2001, Eminem took a short break from making music because of his personal life. He reconnected in 2008 starting his music career again after fighting off his drug and alcohol addictions. He came out with the album, Relapse in 2009 and Recovery, an album which expressed his attempts to cope with his struggles. Recovery sparked a gentler and influential tone then his previous albums. Eminem said, “I don’t want to go overboard with it but I do feel like that if I can help people that have been through a similar situation, then, you know, why not?” This album won a Grammy for best Rap
