Later that winter the ‘praying Indians” of Massachusetts had their feelings of uncertain. A certain young woman by the name of Mary Rowlandson was being held captive. During her captivity she had gotten into close contact with Philip (Metacom) himself. She had reported in her journals “In my travels an Indian came to me and told me if I were willing, him and his squaw Would run away and go home along with me”. Early April of 1676, a praying Indian by the name of Tom Dublot, met with Philip to talk about her release.
It is January of 1704. As John Demos puts it, “A night of winter, a night of want, night of war.” The Iroquoi Indians and French invade an English frontier capturing or killing many of its inhabitants. This is the night that starts the ripple effect that John Demos traces in his book, The Unredeemed Captive: A Family Story from Early America. Of the many that were captured by the Kahnawake Indians, Revered John Williams, a minister from Deerfield and his large family were among them.
Throughout history, there have been many literary studies that focused on the culture and traditions of Native Americans. Native writers have worked painstakingly on tribal histories, and their works have made us realize that we have not learned the full story of the Native American tribes. Deborah Miranda has written a collective tribal memoir, “Bad Indians”, drawing on ancestral memory that revealed aspects of an indigenous worldview and contributed to update our understanding of the mission system, settler colonialism and histories of American Indians about how they underwent cruel violence and exploitation. Her memoir successfully addressed past grievances of colonialism and also recognized and honored indigenous knowledge and identity.
Through his role as an ambassador and a leader, the Comanche Chief was able to establish a middle ground for effective communication between the white men of the west and the Comanche tribe without forfeiting significant facets of his tribe’s culture. In ways that kept intact the cultural identity of the Comanche people, Parker acted as a “cultural broker” who actively sought ways in which the white men and native people could work towards a common ground. To understand Parker’s role as the chief of the Comanche people, it is imperative to comprehend the aspects of a “cultural broker”. The responsibility of a cultural broker is to facilitate the cultural exchange between a group of people to another group of people.
One main language future that was talked about throughout the reading was the “place-name” tradition their ancestors used when they first arrived to the land a began naming certain locations based on what they looked like or offered. Petalesharo’s writing reflected the treatment of Native Americans during the 1800s. Being a Native American himself, Petalesharo was able to give perspective on a point in history typically viewed from a white man’s opinion. The excerpt “Petalesharo” explains how the Native American was able “to prevent young women captured by other tribes from being sacrificed”, making Petalesharo well liked by the Americans (588). Petalesharo gave the “Speech of the Pawnee Chief” infront of Americans to convey the differences between Native Americans and Americans through emotion, logic, and credibility, which showed how the two groups will never be the same, but still can coexist in the world together.
“Columbus, the Indians, and Human Progress”, chapter one of “A People’s History of the United States”, written by professor and historian Howard Zinn, concentrates on a different perspective of major events in American history. It begins with the native Bahamian tribe of Arawaks welcoming the Spanish to their shores with gifts and kindness, only then for the reader to be disturbed by a log from Columbus himself – “They willingly traded everything they owned… They would make fine servants… With fifty men we could subjugate them all and make them do whatever we want.” (Zinn pg.1) In the work, Zinn continues explaining the unnecessary evils Columbus and his men committed unto the unsuspecting natives.

Science journalist, Charles C. Mann, had successfully achieved his argumentative purpose about the “Coming of Age in the Dawnland.” Mann’s overall purpose of writing this argumentative was to show readers that there’s more to than just being called or being stereotyped as a savage- a cynical being. These beings are stereotyped into being called Indians, or Native Americans (as they are shorthand names), but they would rather be identified by their own tribe name. Charles Mann had talked about only one person in general but others as well without naming them. Mann had talked about an Indian named Tisquantum, but he, himself, does not want to be recognized as one; to be more recognized as the “first and foremost as a citizen of Patuxet,”(Mann 24).
American literature starts with the orally transmitted stories of the native Indian Americans tribes. At that time, more than 500 Indian American tribes coexisted with each other, despite having a different set of values and religious beliefs. As a result, the different lifestyles that the native Indian Americans have at time led to the creation of a lush diverse literature that is inspiring today .Nevertheless, if one looks closely into the literature, one can draw few generalizations. For instance, native Indians have a tremendous reverence for nature and simple living. Nature occupies many a role in the life of native Indians.
