Carl Sandburg, a famous poet and biographer once said,” Nothing happens unless we first dream. No matter what you set out to do, you first need to think about what you want to achieve. Without dreams, nothing happens”. During the times of the 1950’s, many people of color experienced various treatments. Whether it was Rosa Parks standing up for herself, or it was Martin Luther King Jr. creating speeches to express his view and his journey. The 50’s was a time of change that impacted a lot of people and events. The dream of Americans in the 1950’s, showed times were changing, causing various changes. Many people of color experienced some type of hate or disrespect, whether it was racial segregation, or people speaking out on the cause. Many people of color had some type of incident occur in their life. Rosa Parks is a well known example of never giving in on her dream or setting it aside for others. Rosa was a dedicated 42 year old woman who believed that everyone has a chance at something even if it is not fair. She was very strong in her opinion that even as a black person, we have the ability to do the same things as white people. This made many people question her, but yet she didnt care what they thought about her. Another prime example of someone who was challenged but was able to preserve would be Martin Luther King Jr. MLK was a historical figure who would speak out on his experiences and what others should take away from his experiences. Martin once said, "First and foremost, we are American citizens. ... We are not here advocating violence. ... The only weapon that we have ... is the weapon of protest. ... The great glory of American democracy is the right to protest for right."( “World Book.”) The quote above shows that people should not be afraid of the differences that America holds, but they should be willing to express it through words and protests. This idea presents that people should be willing to think what they want and do anything they want to even if others say not to. Finally, everyone has opinions and views on certain things during the 1950’s, but it was always important to stay true to yourself and believe in what you want to. Even if others disagree and hate these
